When designing for people with ADHD, there are certain considerations that need to be made in order to ensure that the kitchen or bath is up to standard.
Tips for the Kitchen
When renovating a kitchen to be more ADHD-friendly, the key focus should be on organization. Kitchens are oftentimes cluttered with countless appliances, cookbooks, dishes, and decorations, but this type of setup is not helpful for people who are prone to distraction. Designating spaces within a kitchen for specific tasks is a great design method for people with ADHD.
For instance, be sure to have separate “stations” within the new kitchen design, like a food preparation station, a station for serving food, and a station for doing the dishes. Use soothing colors for painting the walls and cabinets, like earth tones (light browns and greens) or a calming blue. Make sure there is plenty of room for storage, as it is essential for people with ADHD to make sure that everything has a place of its own.
Bathroom Design Ideas
In terms of the bathroom design, you should again focus on utilizing cool, soothing colors, which go great with a beach theme or a more natural setting. Pairing things that match, like a shower curtain and bath mat set in corresponding colors, will make the space feel put together and look harmonious. It can also be useful to design a bathroom space as a relaxing retreat, with a large soaking tub or, at least, a trickling water feature. This way, the bathroom can become a designated spot to unwind and relax in, which is essential for people with ADHD.
By eliminating clutter in the kitchen and bathroom and infusing elements that will bring about a sense of calm and harmony, people with ADHD can enjoy their homes and be free from unneeded interruptions to daily life.
