You can buy the most energy-efficient window on the market, with grid patterns that reflect your style and decorative hardware that’s nothing less than elegant, but if the window is incorrectly sized, those desirable features won’t matter. And, if your window was custom made, your problem may be compounded because most window companies won’t allow you to return a custom-made product. That’s why it’s critical when undertaking a window replacement project that your windows are measured and installed properly.
If this sounds like a lot of pressure to you, you’re not alone. Many DIY-ers have tried and failed before you, and that’s because while the concept of measuring for replacement sounds simple, it can be more complex than you might think. If you don’t want to spend the time and effort required to replace your own windows, it may be best to trust the measuring of your windows to the experts at Alure.
Steps for Measuring for a Replacement Window
Measure the width from one side jamb to the other at three different points: the top, the middle, and the bottom. Be sure to measure from the surface of the jambs, not the trim strips or parting stops. Write down the measurements and circle the smallest figure. This is the rough opening width, and the one you’ll reference when ordering the replacement window.
Measure from the top of the frame to the window sill at three different points: the left side, the middle, and the right side. (If the sill is sloped, measure from its highest point, usually right against the window.) Again, write down the figures and circle the smallest one. This is the rough opening height, which you’ll use when ordering your new window.
Measure the Depth
Some windows may be too deep to fit into your window opening, so this step is important. Measure from the outside edge of the frame to the inside edge at several locations. Once again, use the smallest figure. (If your window won’t open, measure the depth from each side of the glass and add the figures. Then add one-eighth inch to account for the thickness of the window pane.)
With these measurements in hand, you can be confident that your replacement window will fit the available space. The only question is, where do you find full-frame windows with all the features and options you want, at a fair price?
