Operation Bring Andrew Home

Posted by in in The Community | May 7, 2012

About 2 years ago, 15-year-old Andrew Rosa, while riding his bike, was hit by a car and severely injured.  In order for Andrew to return home, his house needed to be outfitted to handle the special needs of hospital equipment and lifts. Alure and several other contractors from NARI’s Long Island Chapter came together to help his special cause.

“This was a great example of two communities coming together, the contractor community and the friends and family of the Rosa family. The contractors knew they needed to get involved so Andrew wouldn’t need to spend extended time in the hospital or rehab facility and his support system of friends and family were right there willing to lend a helping hand for whatever was needed,” said Doug Cornwell, VP of Operations, Alure Home Improvements.

With the help of these wonderful contractors and friends, the Rosa family has a brand new extension with two bedrooms and a universal design bath to be able to accomodate Andrew’s equipment.

Alure provides assistance in build of new home for Samantha Garvey of Brentwood, NY

Posted by in in The Community | February 22, 2012

After a whirlwind couple of weeks, Samantha Garvey, the once-homeless teen who captured the nation with her inspirational story of becoming an Intel science contest semifinalist, will finally get a chance to settle up inside her own bedroom, take a deep breath, and fall into a well-earned nap.

The 18-year-old Brentwood High School senior and her family moved into their new home on Saturday after the family of five was evicted on New Year’s Eve last year, and had to spend the last couple of weeks inside a Bay Shore shelter.

The aspiring marine biologist went from being a little-known science whiz-kid on Long Island studying shellfish, to one of 300 selected as a semifinalist in the Intel competition, a regular on nationally televised news telecasts, and to a guest on “Ellen.” Her story also earned her a trip to Washington D.C. for President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday.

“Everything that has happened in these past few weeks has been unbelievable and amazing and just completely surreal,” Garvey said, under a crisp blue sky, with her family surrounding her outside their new rent-subsidized house in Bay Shore.

This weekend, let us recognize our patriotic duty as citizens, businessmen, community members and most of all, as human beings by honoring those whose lives were lost on such a tragic day 10 years ago. The one common sentiment I hear from people of all walks of like who were affected by the loss of someone they knew, is that they will never forget. Whether 1 year, 8 years, or 20 years later…we must never forget.

Dear fellow Long Islanders,

Hopefully, you and your loved ones have safely weathered this past weekend’s storm. Unfortunately, Long Island did get hit pretty hard and many homes on Long Island suffered damages, ranging from minor to very severe. Over the next several weeks, Long Island will undoubtedly see a number of “storm chasing” companies from around the country, make their way to Long Island, where they will set up shop, and look to generate some quick business. Some, while not all, will take advantage of homeowner’s desperation and will prey on those most vulnerable.

Why We Love to Hear Customer Stories

Posted by in Customer Stories,in The Community | August 11, 2011

One of my favorite parts of working at Alure Home Improvements is to call customers after a basement renovation has been completed to let them know how much an energy tax credit they’re entitled to.

“So what are you using the space for?” I ask them. It’s remarkable the diversity of answers I get to that question.

Kings Park / Commack Alumni Hockey Game : Bringing a community together for a great cause

Posted by in in The Community | June 3, 2011

Community. Few things make me prouder than personally impacting others to make a difference in the community. I recently had the honor and privilege to be part of two great causes and one amazing event that did just that. The Kings Park/Commack alumni hockey team was looking to set up fundraiser hockey game against some New York Islanders alumni, in an effort to support two great foundations…. the Sarah Grace Foundation and the Frank Rizzo Memorial Scholarship Fund. I have known the Rizzo family for over 20 years and when Kevin Barratinni called me to see if I could help out or offer some advice on his idea for the fundraising game, I was honored and excited to do something that involved so much community spirit and also, my favorite New York sports team.
